Hurricane Katrina originated as a Tropical Depression in August 2005. She intensified to a hurricane two hours before making landfall in Florida, then became Category 5 after passing over the Gulf of Mexico. Katrina weakened to a Category 3 before making landfall in Mississippi and Louisiana, where levees broke and caused massive flooding in New Orleans. The scale of disaster prompted national and international aid, and scores of residents had to be evacuated. Hurricane Katrina is tied with 2017’s Hurricane Harvey as the costliest storms on record.
