Sugar mills were constructed on St. Croix by the Danish government from 1750-1800 for sugar to be produced using slave labor. Known as the “Garden of the West Indies”, St. Croix was the 4th largest sugar producing colony in the Caribbean, up until 1820 when the sugar economy began to decline. Where there once were 150 mills dotting the island, today there are about 115. Many have been preserved and are open for tours.
